San Marzano tomatoes originate from the small town of San Marzano sul Sarno, near Naples, Italy, and were first grown in volcanic soil in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
Tomatoes grow best when planted in soil with a pH between 6 and 7; add lime every few years if you garden in an acid-soil area.
Keep your tomato plants evenly watered; deep but fairly infrequent waterings are best.
Mulch with a two-inch layer of compost after the soil has warmed thoroughly.
