Lychnis chalcedonica, commonly known as Flower of Bristol, Maltese Cross, or Scarlet Lychnis, is a bold and traditional perennial that produces clusters of bright scarlet-red flowers shaped like crosses. Known for its old-fashioned charm and eye-catching display, this plant has been a favorite in British cottage gardens for centuries.

Flower of Bristol is especially loved for its tall upright stems, brilliant color, and ability to attract pollinators. It provides vertical interest and a strong visual punch in borders and mixed flower beds.

Usage:
Perfect for cottage gardens, perennial borders, wildflower patches, and cutting gardens. Ideal as a mid-to-back border plant due to its height and sturdy stems. The nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Sowing Time:

  • Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost or

  • Direct sow outdoors after danger of frost has passed.

Germination:

  • Germinates in 14–21 days at 18–22°C (65–72°F).

  • Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and press down lightly; light aids germination.

  • Keep moist until seedlings appear.

Soil Requirements:

  • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

  • Tolerates poor soils, including sandy or rocky types.

  • Best in neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–7.5).

Light Requirements:

  • Full sun to light partial shade.

  • More blooms and sturdier growth in full sun.

Watering:

  • Moderate water needs.

  • Drought-tolerant once established but performs best with consistent moisture.

Planting Tips:

  • Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

  • Deadhead to prolong blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding.

  • May require light staking in windy areas due to its height.

Height & Spread:

  • Grows up to 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) tall.

  • Spreads 30–45 cm (12–18 inches).
