Digitalis purpurea, commonly known as Foxglove, is a timeless favorite in classic English and cottage gardens. This mixed color blend features elegant spires of tubular, bell-shaped flowers in beautiful shades of purple, pink, white, cream, and rose, often with speckled throats. These statuesque blooms are a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and bring vertical drama and soft texture to garden borders.

Foxgloves are biennials—producing foliage in the first year and stunning flower spikes in the second—though they can often self-seed and naturalize for recurring beauty.

Usage:
Perfect for cottage gardens, wildflower plantings, shaded borders, and woodland edges. Their tall flower spikes make them ideal for the back of flower beds or in drifts along fences and walls. Excellent for pollinator-friendly gardens.

Sowing Time:

  • Sow seeds in late spring to midsummer for flowering the following year.

  • Start indoors or sow directly outdoors in a shaded or semi-shaded area.

Germination:

  • Germinates in 14–21 days at 15–20°C (59–68°F).

  • Sow seeds on the surface of the soil; do not cover as light aids germination.

  • Keep soil consistently moist during germination.

Soil Requirements:

  • Prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil.

  • Best in slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).

  • Tolerates poor soils but appreciates compost enrichment.

Light Requirements:

  • Thrives in partial shade or filtered sunlight.

  • Will grow in full sun in cooler climates with sufficient moisture.

Watering:

  • Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods.

  • Keep soil moist but not soggy.

Planting Tips:

  • Thin seedlings to 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

  • Stake tall plants if necessary.

  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage longer flowering or leave to self-seed.

Height & Spread:

  • Grows 90–150 cm (3–5 feet) tall.

  • Spreads 30–45 cm (12–18 inches).

Caution:
Toxic if ingested – keep away from pets and children. Handle with care.
