Lavandula dentata, commonly known as French Lavender, is a beautiful, aromatic herb with toothed silver-green foliage and soft purple flower spikes. It’s prized for its long blooming period, fragrant flowers, and ornamental appeal. French Lavender is perfect for Mediterranean-style gardens, herb borders, containers, and even as a low hedge.

Usage:
Ideal for herb gardens, flower beds, edging, rock gardens, and pots. The fragrant blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and the dried flowers can be used in sachets, potpourri, or aromatherapy. Also valued for its calming properties and essential oils.

Sowing Time:

  • Sow indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost.

  • Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

  • In warm climates, seeds can be sown directly in late spring.

Germination:

  • Germinates in 14–28 days at 18–22°C (65–72°F).

  • Lightly cover seeds or press into soil — they need light to germinate.

  • Patience is key — lavender seeds can germinate slowly and irregularly.

Soil Requirements:

  • Prefers well-drained, sandy or gritty soil.

  • Avoid heavy or waterlogged soil.

  • Best in slightly alkaline to neutral soil (pH 6.5–7.5).

Light Requirements:

  • Full sun — at least 6–8 hours daily.

Watering:

  • Moderate watering — drought tolerant once established.

  • Avoid overwatering; let the soil dry between waterings.

Planting Tips:

  • Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

  • Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.

  • Excellent for dry, sunny borders and xeriscaping.

Height & Spread:

  • Grows 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) tall and wide.

Additional Info:
French Lavender offers both beauty and function — it provides color, fragrance, pollinator support, and herbal use. Unlike English Lavender, it is less cold-hardy but blooms longer and thrives in warm, dry climates. A must-have for herb lovers and flower gardeners alike.
