Lemon Balm is a perennial plant growing up to 1 meter in height. It is characterized by a specific, lemon scent - especially before the flowering period - and small, white, lip flowers. Sowing seeds is carried out into pots or boxes. Lemon balm feels best in a sunny position with loamy soil, rich in nutrients. It shows sensitivity to frost, so before winter months come, it must be covered with leaves or branches. Its flowering falls during the summer period, so the three warmest months of the year: June, July and August. Lemon balm has been known since antiquity as a honey and medicinal plant. The flowers of the plant are desired by bees because of the nectar they produce. Lemon balm has analgesic and sedative effects, is helpful in flatulence, improves appetite and lowers blood pressure. It can also be helpful in the event of migraine. Its culinary properties are also well known, young shoots of (fresh) plants are used, among others, for seasoning salads, cottage cheese, soups, meat, mushroom and fish dishes. Lemon balm is eagerly added to herb sauces, yogurt or mayonnaise. Its cultivation will certainly not cause us any trouble, and thanks to having our own specimen in our own garden we will be able to take advantage of its benefits at any time.
